Have you ever come across the Fruit of the Spirit and thought, I’d love for my kids to really sit with these—but wondered how to bring them up in a way that doesn’t feel like a list to memorize?
That’s exactly where we found ourselves. There’s something so lovely about those nine attributes from Galatians 5—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. They’re not just nice ideas; they’re the kind of qualities that shape how we move through the world and how we treat the people around us. But explaining them to little ones? That can feel like a tall order.
So we started thinking about ways to make these virtues something kids can actually hold—in their hands, in their imagination, in their everyday lives. That’s what led us to create a set of Fruit of the Spirit 3-part cards. They’re simple, but they’ve become such a gentle way to spark conversation.
Whether you’re a parent looking for something to tuck into your morning rhythm, a teacher wanting to weave these ideas into your classroom, or a Sunday school volunteer hoping to bring a little more engagement to your lessons, these cards have a way of opening up the conversation without it feeling like a lesson. Kids can match, sort, talk about what each word means to them, or even just keep them nearby as quiet reminders.

So, what exactly are 3-part cards?
If you haven’t come across them before, 3-part cards are one of those simple tools that somehow make learning feel more like playing. The idea is pretty straightforward: each set comes with three pieces—a picture, a label, and a definition or explanation. Kids get to match them up, move them around, and in the process, the concepts start to click in a way that feels hands-on and natural. It takes something abstract—like “patience” or “gentleness”—and gives it a shape they can hold.
The best part? You can use them with kids at totally different reading levels, all with the same set. Here’s how it might look in your home or classroom:
For little ones who aren’t reading yet
At this stage, it’s all about building connections between the word and what it represents. I like to lay out the picture cards face up, then hand the labeled cards to the child one at a time (or keep them face down as a little game). They find the picture that matches and set them side by side. Once they’ve made a match, we take a moment to talk about it—something simple like, “This one says kindness. See how they’re sharing? That’s kindness.” No pressure, just conversation.
For emergent readers
This is such a fun stage because they’re starting to recognize words, and these cards give them a chance to practice in a low-stakes way. You can start with the picture cards face up and have them find the matching label—great for building confidence. Once they’re comfortable, you can switch it up: lay out the labels and have them hunt for the matching pictures. I love using this time to chat about the words as they work—pointing to joy as they match it, or asking them to try sounding it out. It’s reading practice that doesn’t feel like practice.
For confident readers
Now the real exploring begins. With confident readers, I bring in the third piece—the definition cards. Mix everything up and let them work through matching pictures to labels, then labels to definitions. What I love most about this stage is watching them make it their own. After everything’s matched, we’ll sit together and they’ll tell me what an attribute means in their own words. Sometimes I’ll ask them to share a time they saw someone show gentleness, or a moment they felt peace. It’s such a sweet window into how they’re processing these ideas.

How to Use the Fruit of the Spirit 3-Part Cards
Using the Fruit of the Spirit 3-part cards can be an enriching experience for learners of all ages. Here are some practical tips on how to utilize these cards effectively:
Matching Game: Start by mixing up the cards and asking students to find pairs. This reinforces their memory and helps them visualize each attribute in relation to its definition.
Group Discussions: Use the cards to spark conversations about the attributes. Ask students how they can apply each characteristic in their daily lives or ask for real-life examples of each virtue.
Creative Activities: Encourage students to draw or write about what each Fruit of the Spirit means to them. Afterward, they can present their work to the class, fostering creativity and peer learning.
Memory Matching: Turn the cards into a game of memory by placing them face down and challenging students to find matching pairs through recall.
Personal Reflection: Have students select one or two cards that resonate with them and write or share reflections on how they can embody these attributes in their own lives.
