Earth Day is a time for us to reflect on the impact we have on our planet and how we can work towards a more sustainable future. While there are many ways to celebrate and honor Earth Day, two of the best ways to involve children is to promote peace and take a stand against emotional consumerism.
Earth day serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of taking care of our planet for current and future generations. As we face growing challenges, it is important that we take time to reflect on how what we believe and teach impact the health of the planet.
Peace is crucial for a healthy planet as it reduces conflict and violence, encourages cooperation and collaboration among countries for environmental protection, promotes sustainable development, and ensures human rights and environmental justice. Prioritizing peace as the foundation for environmental conservation and sustainability is essential for the well-being of both people and the planet.
It is important to demonstrate to children all the benefits of peaceful coexistence that is not rooted on principles of dominance of one side and subservient attitude of the other, but peace that is built between people by fostering empathy and cooperation. Ultimately by doing that we can help create a more peaceful and safe world for everyone. By instilling values of peace based on equality, mutual respect, and shared interests in children, we can help build a harmonious and understanding society where conflicts are resolved peacefully and all individuals are treated with dignity.
In Maria’s words, “We must take man himself, take him with patience and confidence, across all the planes of education. We must put everything before him, the school, culture, religion, the world itself. We must help him to develop within himself that which will make him capable of understanding. It is not merely words, it is a labour of education. This will be a preparation for peace – for peace cannot exist without justice and without men endowed with a strong personality and a strong conscience.”
M. Montessori “Citizen of the World”
“The child should love everything that he learns, for his mental and emotional growths are linked. Whatever is presented to him must be made beautiful and clear, striking his imagination. Once this love has been kindled, all problems confronting the educationalist will disappear… It is hoped that when this sentiment of love for all subjects can be aroused in children, people in general will become more human, and brutal wars will come to an end. ” To Educate the Human Potential
One of the most important aspects of promoting peace is understanding the political landscape of the world. Teaching children about politics and how they can use peaceful means to hold politicians accountable for their actions is crucial in creating a more peaceful and just society. Parents can empower children to understand the root causes of conflicts and advocate for peaceful resolutions. Teachers can challenge their students to ask questions and think critically. Together we can work towards a more peaceful world for future generations.
promoting peace through understanding politics can be done through hands-on activities that engage children in critical thinking and active learning. Here are a few ideas:
Organize a mock election: Have children participate in a mock election where they choose a leader and discuss the qualities that make a good leader. This can help them understand the democratic process and the importance of voting.
Role-playing activities: Have children take on different roles such as politicians, community leaders, or activists and engage in debates and discussions about important issues. This can help them develop empathy and understanding for different perspectives.
Community service projects: Engage children in community service projects that address social issues and promote peace. This can help them understand the importance of taking action and making a positive impact on their community.
Peace education curriculum: Integrate peace education into the curriculum by teaching children about conflict resolution, mediation, and peaceful communication strategies. Encourage them to practice these skills in their daily interactions with others.
By incorporating these hands-on activities into the Montessori environment, educators and parents can empower children to become informed and active global citizens who are committed to promoting peace and justice in the world.
Another way to honour Earth Day is by discouraging emotional consumerism and promoting responsible and conscious consumption. In our modern society, we have become accustomed to constantly buying new things and consuming resources at an alarming rate. This consumerist mindset not only harms the planet, but also contributes to a culture of waste and overconsumption.
Emotional consumerism is the act of making purchases based on feelings and emotions, rather than actual needs. This can lead to impulsive buying, overspending, clutter, and an accumulation of unnecessary possessions.
Here are some hands-on activities to help explain these concepts to children:
Create a feelings chart: Start by discussing different emotions with the children, such as happiness, sadness, anger, and excitement. Then, create a chart or poster with these emotions written out, along with corresponding images or drawings. Discuss how these emotions can influence our purchasing decisions and how to recognize when we are buying something based on our emotions.
Role-playing activity: Set up a pretend store or shopping area in the classroom, complete with different items for sale. Have the children take turns playing the roles of the shopper and the seller. Encourage them to think critically about their purchases and discuss why they are choosing to buy certain items. This can help them understand the impact of emotional consumerism on their decision-making.
Mindful shopping practice: Take the children on a field trip to a local store or market and teach them how to become conscious consumers. Discuss the importance of thinking about their purchases carefully, considering factors such as quality, sustainability, and necessity. Encourage them to ask questions about where products come from and how they are made.
DIY projects: Engage the children in hands-on activities that promote conscious consumerism, such as making their own products from natural or sustainable materials. This could include creating homemade soaps, candles, or artwork using recycled materials. This will help them appreciate the value of ethically sourced and environmentally friendly products.
Here is one example I would like to share from our family experience that I hope may benefit yours.
Deciding to switch to castile soap in our home has been one of the best decisions that ticked every box when it comes to conscious consumerism. Not only it has had a positive impact on our budget, but it has also been a much healthier option for our bodies and the environment. We use it foam dispensers because it has natural foaming properties, which make it easy to create a rich lather when mixed with water and dispensed through a pump.
For those who may not be familiar, castile soap is a plant-based soap made from olive oil, water, and lye. It has been used for centuries and is known for its gentle cleansing properties. We first discovered castile soap when we were looking for a more natural alternative to the conventional soaps that were filled with harmful chemicals.
A little goes a long way with castile soap, so we find that we don’t need to use nearly as much compared to other soaps and cleaners. In addition to that, it is free from synthetic fragrances, dyes, and preservatives, making it a much gentler option for sensitive skin.
Furthermore, castile soap is also better for the environment because it is made from natural ingredients such as olive oil, coconut oil, and other plant-based oils, which means it is biodegradable and does not contain harmful chemicals or synthetic ingredients that can harm aquatic life and ecosystems. Additionally, castile soap is often sold in minimal and recyclable packaging, reducing waste and the use of plastic in our daily routines.
To promote responsible and conscious consumption in a Montessori classroom, you can introduce hands-on activities that demonstrate the importance of reducing waste and reusing materials. Here are a few practical ideas:
DIY Upcycling Projects: Encourage students to bring in old materials or objects that they no longer use and challenge them to repurpose these items into something new and useful. For example, they can turn old t-shirts into reusable bags, or create artwork using scraps of paper and cardboard.
Waste Sorting Game: Set up a sorting station with different bins for recyclables, compostables, and trash. Have students sort through a variety of items and decide which bin each item belongs in. This activity can help them understand the importance of recycling and reducing waste.
Planting and Gardening: Teach students about the importance of growing their own food and reducing their carbon footprint by planting a classroom garden. Involve them in every step of the process, from planting seeds to harvesting vegetables, and discuss the impact of food production on the environment.
Nature Walks and Outdoor Exploration: Take students on regular nature walks to observe and appreciate the beauty of the natural world. Encourage them to collect litter and participate in clean-up efforts to help protect the environment.
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Challenge: Challenge students to come up with creative ways to reduce waste in their daily lives. This can include using reusable alternatives to single-use items, such as water bottles and lunch containers, and finding ways to repurpose or recycle items that would otherwise be thrown away.
By teaching children the value of using and reusing long-lasting items, living within their means, and being mindful of their consumption, we can instill in them a sense of environmental stewardship and responsibility. Encouraging children to be mentally astute and not simply follow trends can help them make more sustainable choices and reduce their impact on the planet.
Earth Day is a time for us to reflect on our impact on the planet and consider how we can work towards a more sustainable future. By encouraging children to promote peace, understand the political landscape, and practice responsible and conscious consumption, we can help create a better world for future generations. Let us all commit to teaching our children to be stewards of the Earth and make a difference in our world.
