Setting up a nature display in a classroom or homeschool learning space can be very beneficial. Not every child enjoys going out in nature.
Many children protest and dislike being outdoors where they can experience discomfort from the weather, they might not like getting dirty and have a fear of crawling creatures.
Setting up a space with natural objects may trigger curiosity towards nature and help little ones ease into the natural environment gradually.
In this guest post, Cornelia of Our World of Wonder shares her story of setting up nature display areas in her homeschool setting. Cornelia has a talent for beautifying her children’s learning spaces with nature and her work is truly inspiring.
Nature has been part of my life ever since I can remember.
I fell in love with it as a child, and I fell in love with it as an adult, every single day.
It is such a wonderful world, full of wonder, beauty and excitement, but nature is also the best teacher we can have.
While preparing the study room for my children, I let myself be inspired by it, and created a few cabinets of natural curiosity, where we display not only the objects we find in our daily walks, but also the collections we have been lucky enough to find locally.
A few people from our community contributed to our study room, with their own collections, the ones you hope you find one day. Why is that? Because they have a history.
Some have been brought from all over the world, and others collected by an amazing couple throughout their life. Once they passed away, their son wanted to give them a good home, and he chose ours, and that made it even more special.
Once we managed to put everything together, I started looking for other educational materials to help us with the study, and the printables from Montessori Nature were what we needed.
Among the favorites are the Rocks & Minerals printable, Mushrooms, Counting 1-10, and the Forest Journal.
Both outside in the wild, and at home in our study room, studying has become something the children look forward to and they absolutely enjoy.
About the Author:
As a child, I loved the trips I used to take with my father on the mountains, exploring the woods and fall in love with the natural world. As an adult, I continued the journey, which took me halfway across the world, survived a plane crash and learned how to meditate in a Buddhist temple. But in my journey, I have found myself, and the true essence of life. As a mother, I wanted to share the love for nature with my children, and teach them values. Raise them to be good people, good friends, good neighbors, but most importantly, good husbands and fathers. To be free, and happy. Our everyday life is a wonderful adventure, with good and bad, but we learn to embrace it all and learn from it. We read, we laugh, we create and explore without limits. This is how “Our world of wonder” page began, from the desire of sharing our homeschool journey, hoping that our lessons and materials will inspire others as well. To promote the love for nature, and to share our desire of protecting it. And to create a community where people can share kindness and support. A community where we share ideas and the love for art, music, and raising our children in a gentle way.
