Montessori phonics is a method of teaching reading and writing based on the sounds (phonemes) that make up words. It involves introducing students to the sounds of the letters and how they combine to form words. Montessori phonics uses a hands-on approach, with students manipulating letters and objects that represent the sounds they are learning. This method builds a strong foundation for children to become confident readers and writers. It also allows them to develop their language skills at their own pace, as they progress through the different stages of phonics learning.
In Montessori learning, digraphs are a set of two consecutive letters representing a single speech sound. They are taught through a combination of visual and tactile learning using various materials such as sandpaper letters, movable alphabets, and picture cards. Students first learn the basic phonetic sounds before moving on to digraphs, which are commonly found in English words such as “sh”, “th”, and “ch”. By mastering digraphs, students can improve their reading and language skills, as well as their overall understanding of the English language.
