In a Montessori classroom, the concept of teaching about the human body can be taught through various hands-on activities. Children can engage in exploring skeleton models, learning about organs and their functions, and examining X-rays and MRIs. Children often get petrified going to a hospital and no wonder – they often encounter bright lights, white coats, and unfamiliar sounds, their personal space often gets invaded and they are expected to sit quietly in waiting rooms for long periods of time to have an appointment.

When creating this pack I was hoping to allow children to get more familiar with their own bodies doctor’s office on the level that a 4 or 6-year-old can grasp.

Human Body Preschool Activities

“I am a doctor” is an initial sound activity. Children learn new vocabulary and practice identifying the initial sounds of each word as they match the corresponding letters to the correct words. We love using magnetic letters if the activity is done on the magnetic board.

I lay out letters and name the sounds the letters make along with introducing each word. Preschool children take turns choosing a letter and placing it on the white abord on top of the correct word.

It is also fun to come up with rhyming words and create a story using the vocabulary presented on the poster.

It is amazing how accessible we can make complex concepts to young children when we break down the information and present it in the form of a puzzle or matching activity.

The pack contains puzzles / matching strips for all five systems of the human body featuring both a boy and a girl outline. A simple conversation can follow the presentation as children gain an understanding of what each system is responsible for – our movements, reactions, digestion making, breathing, etc.

I always aim to reuse tracing cards whenever I can when working in the classroom. When laminated, those skeleton-themed shape tracing/drawing cards can be used with a dry-erase pen multiple times.

My children had a ball gathering objects from the environment to match the shapes presented.

x-ray – pairing activity

This activity encourages children to use a magnifying glass to search for pairs – x-ray images that match up with different parts of the body. This can be a fun little challenge for kindergarten students.

diagnosis – sorting activity

This is a useful exercise that will drive children to concentrate deeper and pay attention to different emotions and what causes them, practice reading body language, and understand people’s facial expressions when there are in pain.

This exercise aims to help children relate and have discussions surrounding different ways we can show empathy when someone is unwell, and learn to listen to our bodies.

Clip cards promote eye and hand coordination and concentration. This exercise reinforces the idea that an appointment is when we have to be at a certain time at a certain place.

The pack includes female and male cards and posters. Children can observe and learn their initial history lessons when they observe the passage of time.

Many will be curious to create their own timelines from when they were born or gather images of their grandparents from a young age up until the present time to create their sequencing activity.

There are many different fun ways this poster can be used to learn the names of bones in the skeletal system.

One of them is to roll the die, clap syllables of the word the die landed on, trace and connect the word to the bone, OR

players say the bone label out loud and touch the location of the bone in the body (eg. head, knee, shoulder, etc.).

Anatomy Study for preschool kids

Children get familiar with the internal parts of the body and their positions with these matching cards. The words intentionally were made large so they can be a part of a vocabulary wall.

Younger children will enjoy having an additional challenge for their little fingers if the cards are laminated and have clear sticky hooks and loop dots attached to keep the cards in place.

It will come in especially handy if the children are working outdoors.

As a follow-up anatomy study activity, once the students are familiar with the vocabulary, they will enjoy this DIY human organs puzzle and matching activity in combination with the human body model children can take apart to examine different internal parts of the body.

Luckily, a trip to a dentist is not necessarily a terrifying experience for children these days anymore. Yet, it is always very beneficial to make a point about the importance of food hygiene and spotlight this vital part of the human body.

Sequencing is an important skill that teaches children many crucial concepts – helps them to recognize patterns, and reinforces logical thinking, and story-telling skills.

When laminated, children color their teeth black to represent tooth decay. Then they use a toothbrush to rub it off to reinforce the idea that cleaning our teeth twice a day gets rid of all the yucky plugs that have been collected there over time.
