I thought I’d share a striking observation from this week that reminded me of what homeschooling is all about.
It was our usual morning. I walked into the kitchen where my son was drawing a picture. Without a second thought, I dropped a comment asking him to start his work.
At that moment in my head I was planning our week, making a shopping list, and had another dozen mental tabs popping up with things to do and remember.
Then it hit me, I realized what I’d done and quickly corrected myself: “Darling, I apologize for interrupting, it looks like you are doing something very important. Can you please tell me more about it?”
It turned out he was designing a “secure house” because he recently watched his dad installing cameras outside. It led to an in-depth conversation about what makes a house secure. We entered a discussion about different climates and construction materials, we talked about reasons why people would need to keep their homes safe, etc. He went on to plan and construct a “secure house” out of blocks.
Homeschool parents wear so many hats, that sometimes we get caught up in all those responsibilities whilst some of the most valuable lessons can be happening right in front of our eyes and require such minimal effort from our side. These lessons are not scripted or presented on our learning shelves.
Assessing Progress
As with any homeschooling approach, it’s important to regularly assess your child’s progress and adjust your approach if necessary. In Montessori homeschooling, this can be done through observation and assessment of your child’s work and engagement with the materials, as well as conversations and check-ins about their learning goals and objectives.

We experimented with various world maps in our homeschooling, but this time, I opted for the World Map with Flags and Capitals including 50 exciting facts.
The map features distinct boundaries demarcating each continent and arranges flags by their respective continent. The photographs were a compelling feature that caught my attention, providing a glimpse into exciting destinations from across the globe.
During my interactions with children, I engage them in games that require them to identify two different countries, their respective continents and capitals, and the borders they share in the four cardinal directions. As an added challenge, I ask them to guess the country’s climate based on its geographical location and to name the colors on the national flag.
