Free Printable – Fall Playdough Mats

As the leaves turn vibrant shades of red, orange, and yellow, it’s time to bring the beauty of fall into the classroom! I am excited to share these fall playdough matsโ€”engaging learning printables designed for preschool and kindergarten children. These delightful mats can provide an interactive way for young learners to explore critical skills in literacy and creativity. Your students will have a blast molding playdough while reinforcing essential concepts.

Engaging in playdough sensory activities, coupled with coloring and cutting tasks, significantly enhances a child’s fine motor skills. It’s a great idea to inspire children to craft autumn-themed elements like acorns, pumpkins, leaves, or mushrooms using playdough templates. These mats can be utilized not only for playdough but also with loose parts such as beads, buttons, and natural materials, alongside a variety of artistic mediums including crayons, paints, pastels, and colored pencils.

Here is what’s included:

Choose mats that appeal to your students most – color or pages with black and white outlines. Print and laminate the mats. Laminating is optional if you print on cardstock and don’t plan to reuse the mats next year.

Gather or make playdough using earthy autumn colors. Also gather erasable markers or pencils.

Invite the child to decorate the mat using playdough – make the shape and letter it begins with, and color the borders. As an additional fine motor challenge, the child might enjoy using loose parts such as beads to decorate the playdough.

Please note that there are a couple of different methods children can use playdough to make the shapes and letters – by pinching off small pieces and applying them on the mats or by rolling sausage-like parts and arranging them on the surface. My advice would be – to let the child decide how they wish to handle their work and exercise their problem-solving abilities.

To further enrich these activities, consider the following suggestions:

Nature Exploration: Take a nature walk to collect real leaves, acorns, and other fall items to inspire children and use as models for their creations.

Story Time Tie-in: Read fall-themed books or stories that feature the elements they are creating. This connection can enhance their understanding and excitement.

Art Integration: After creating with playdough, encourage children to draw or paint their fall elements, reinforcing their artistic expression and creativity.

Scented Playdough: Make scented playdough using spices like cinnamon or pumpkin spice to add another sensory dimension to the activity.

Cutting Practice: Provide child-safe scissors for children to cut out shapes or create decorations for their playdough creations, further promoting fine motor development.

Group Collaboration: Set up a collaborative project where children can build a large fall display using their individual creations, fostering teamwork and social skills.

Thematic Follow-up Activities: Plan additional activities such as fall-themed puzzles, scavenger hunts, or simple science experiments (like observing how leaves change color) to extend their learning.

By incorporating these ideas, you will not only support fine motor development but also encourage creativity, collaboration, and a deeper understanding of the autumn season.
