Learning To Read the Montessori Way
Phonics is a method of teaching reading and writing that relies on the sounds of letters and letter patterns. It involves teaching children to connect the sounds of spoken language with letters or groups of letters, known as graphemes. This helps children to read and write words by sounding them out and blending the individual sounds together.
Phonics is often used in combination with other teaching methods to help children become confident and proficient readers and writers. It is a key component of basic literacy education in many schools and is considered the foundation for strong reading skills.
Learning to read the Montessori way focuses on developing phonemic awareness and a love for reading. Children learn to recognize letters and their sounds through hands-on activities and games, such as matching objects to their initial sound or placing letters in sand trays. They also work on building their vocabulary through exposure to a range of books and stories. In the Montessori approach, reading is viewed as a natural and pleasurable activity that children will naturally engage in when given the right tools and opportunities.
